Primal Scene of Japan°ßA Journey to the Countryside of Okitama,Yamagata
Okitama has many traditional and historical festivals. Here°«s introduction to some of our most unique festivals.
This festival begins with a reenactment of the great battle of Kawanakajima. About 700 volunteers take the roles of soldiers from both the Uesugi and Takeda factions, making this reenactment look like a real samurai battle. You will feel the fantasy and the excitement from this powerful battle as if you had been transported through time back to the warring states period.
°‘Snow Lantern Festival°’
This festival started as a requiem for souls of those who died in World War II.
Mystic and beautiful illuminations by candles from 300 snow lanterns and over 3000 smaller snow lanterns will guide you through this fairy tale land. This festival is packed full of events and local exhibitions.
°‘Nagai Black Lion Festival°’
This festival prays for a huge harvest and safety for families with a dance featuring 10 different black lions from different districts in Nagai City. The lions°« black lacquered faces, wide open mouths and long bodies, each made by over 10 shrine parishioners, are very powerful.
